The international favorite from Portugal, Port is a fortified wine that is aged and sweet. This dessert wine comes in a wide range of styles based on region and aging techniques. Its rich flavors include plum, cherry, chocolate, raisins, cinnamon, and caramel. Ports are usually very sweet, full-bodied, tannic, highly acidic, and more than 15% alcohol. Ports are known for aging well and are usually left in the cellar for ten or more years. Port is often drunk as an aperitif after dinner or with cheese plates, particularly blue cheese and other aged cheeses. Ruby and Tawny are the two most popular styles of Port. Some of our favorite brands of Port include Cockburn?s, Sandeman, and Porto Cruz.
