Gin is a spirit that is often confused with vodka. While vodka is designed to be odorless and tasteless, besides the alcohol of course, gin has a distinct smell and taste of juniper berries or pine. Most countries require gin to be at least 40% alcohol. Other extracts or aromatics can be added to the gin along with the juniper berries. Gin has been around for centuries and has Dutch roots. There are five styles of gin: London Dry (dry), Plymouth Gin (must be made in Plymouth, England), Old Tom (off-dry), Navy Strength (57% alcohol or higher), and American Gin (more herbal). Common cocktails include the classic Martini and the Gin and Tonic, both are commonly substituted with vodka.
