This underrated white wine is grown almost exclusively in the region of Rueda, Spain, not to be confused with the Verdelho grape of Portugal that is used to make Madeira. Primary flavors include peach, grapefruit, honeydew, lime, and fennel. While most wine grape originated in Italy, Spain, or France, Verdejo?s roots lie in North Africa. Wines that are simply labeled ?Rueda? must be at least 50% Verdejo with the rest usually being Sauvignon Blanc or Macabeo. These grapes can be hard to grow and are often harvest at night, ensuring that they remain fresh during harvest. Some of our favorite brands include Arindo Rueda Verdejo, Shaya, and Tuna Club. Verdejo pairs well with acidic foods like Mexican cuisine and fish.
